Dr. Avelino Guterres Correia, S.Ked, MPH, Ph.D, is an accomplished public health expert, educator, and national advisor whose career has spanned clinical practice, academic leadership, policy development, and international health diplomacy. Born in Timor-Leste and educated across Indonesia, Australia, and the United States, Dr. Correia has earned a diverse set of degrees including a Doctor of Science in Public Health, a Master of Public Health, and qualifications in educational leadership and general medicine. His dedication to the advancement of public health and education in Timor-Leste has positioned him as a central figure in national reform efforts and global health collaboration.

 

Dr. Correia serves as a Senior Health Advisor to the Ministry of Health of the Democratic Republic of Timor-Leste, guiding strategic planning, ethics, and human resource development across the sector. His contributions have extended beyond borders through his representation at multiple World Health Assembly and WHO South-East Asia Region Committee sessions. In academic circles, he has played foundational roles as Vice Rector, Dean, and lecturer at several Timorese universities—mentoring generations of students in public health, epidemiology, and population studies.

 

His scholarly work includes extensive research on infectious diseases, health resilience, and maternal and child health. He has co-authored publications in international peer-reviewed journals, addressing key issues such as tuberculosis, malaria, dengue, and healthcare access. His influence also includes contributions to public health policy documents and national strategy frameworks, as well as translation and proofreading of technical health literature for governmental and international agencies.

 

Multilingual and versatile, Dr. Correia is fluent in Portuguese, English, Tetun, Indonesian, and several regional dialects, enhancing his capacity to communicate across communities and institutions. His engagement in training programs and international seminars reflects a passion for lifelong learning and capacity building. As an author, he has published books on biostatistics, reproductive health, and family planning—underscoring his commitment to strengthening knowledge systems in public health.
