Dr. Hiew Boon Thong is a distinguished academic and public servant with a remarkable career spanning over three decades. He served in the Royal Malaysian Police Force for more than 36 years, culminating in the rank of Assistant Superintendent of Police. Throughout his tenure, Dr. Hiew exhibited exceptional leadership and dedication, earning numerous accolades, including Service Medals and the prestigious Excellent Service Award from the Inspector General of Police in 2008.
Following his retirement from the police force, Dr. Hiew transitioned to the private sector, where he has made significant contributions as the Managing Director of two local oil palm companies, Happy Plantations (Sandakan) Pte Ltd and Happy Plantations (Kota Marudu) Pte Ltd. His extensive experience in both public service and business management has equipped him with a unique perspective on governance and organizational leadership.
In addition to his professional accomplishments, Dr. Hiew has been actively engaged in religious and social activities for over 40 years. He has organized numerous large-scale Buddhist events, including the Buddha Day (Wesak Day) celebrations in Sabah, greatly benefiting the local community. His commitment to social welfare is further exemplified by his role as the founder and current Chairman of several Buddhist associations, including the Sabah Amitabha Society and multiple Guang Hao Buddhist Societies in Malaysia.
Academically, Dr. Hiew holds two doctorates: a Doctorate in Business Administration (DBA) and a Professional Doctorate (PD) in Buddhist Studies, both from the European International University. He also possesses two Master’s degrees—one in Business Administration (MBA) with Distinction from Anglia Ruskin University in the UK, and another in Buddhist Studies from the University of Sunderland.
Currently, Dr. Hiew is pursuing a third Doctorate in Business Administration with Asia E-University in Malaysia, alongside a third Master’s degree in Buddhist Studies from the International Buddhist College in Thailand. His relentless pursuit of knowledge reflects his commitment to personal and professional growth.
